As fans eagerly await the third installment, the movie has hit headlines under deeply unfortunate circumstances.
On Monday, October 31, the head caterer for the movie, named in reports as MB, suffered a fatal heart attack outside a pub in the town.
His death sparked an official drug search of the catering staff hotel rooms after cocaine was reportedly found in his pocket.
Additionally, his wife, who was with him at the time of his death, told investigators that MB suffered from heart disease.
According to a report by Italian newspaper Il Giornale, the hotel rooms of the movie’s operators, toolmakers, sound staff and engineers were searched, as well as the area of the marina where production is located.
The man, 55, allegedly suffered a heart attack after leaving a bar at 9 p.m. local time. He suffered a heart attack, followed by a cardiac arrest, People reported.
Il Giornale reported that following the raid, two Roman caterers, both over 30, were arrested after cocaine was seized from their hotel rooms. In total, 120 grams were retrieved by officers, and the two men were placed under house arrest on suspicion of drug dealing.
Another member of the production staff was also found in possession of narcotics for personal use. They subsequently had their driver’s license revoked.
According to People, the illegal activity didn’t occur on the set of The Equalizer 3 and they were arrested following a private event.
Filming for The Equalizer 3 hasn’t been affected by the arrests, and the catering company — an independent contractor — is likely to be replaced, Deadline reported.
The Equalizer 3 sees Denzel Washington reprise his role as retired U.S. Marine and DIA officer Robert McCall. The movie serves as sequel to the 2018 film, The Equalizer 2, which was based on the TV series of the same name.
Just like the original series and first two films in the movie franchise, McCall’s body count is set to rise and he uncovers a dangerous criminal plot.
Very few details about the movie’s plot have been released, but one thing has been confirmed, McCall will be embarking on an international adventure.
Antoine Fuqua serves as producer and director of The Equalizer 3, marking the fifth collaboration between Washington and Fuqua.
The movie also sees Washington reunite with Dakota Fanning, nearly 20 years after they first worked together in Man on Fire.
Newsweek has contacted Columbia Pictures for comment.
The Equalizer 3 is coming to theaters on September 1, 2023.
